The region of Katarzyna Estate is famous for its ancient history and traditions. Sources dating as far back as 5 000 years ago are an evidence for the fact that Thracians, Romans and Bulgarians, who lived in that land, have been involved with the vine-growing and wine-making since the antiquity.
To the west of Mezek village could be seen the ruins of one of the best preserved medieval strongholds in Bulgaria. It had the functions of a castle and had been built for a garrison.
10 km to the North East of Svilengrad, near Matochina village is positioned the stronghold Bukelon, dating from XІІ-XІV century. It is famous for the battle near Andrianopol between Romans and Goths in the year 378. In 1205 in an epical battle between Bulgarians under Tsar Kaloyan of Bulgaria, and Crusaders under Baldwin I. The Bulgarian ruler defeated Crusaders and captured the emperor Baldwin I.
The old stone bridge over Maritza river is constructed in 1529. It is one of the most fascinating architectural monuments in South East Europe and is under the protection of UNESCO.
In the surrounding area of Svilengrad near Levka, Raikova Mogila and Pystrogor villages were found many archeological findings. In hills near Svilengrad were found many objects that are an evidence for the bloom of the Thracian civilization.
